| safe and silent [public] |
[Aug. 31st, 2008|09:27 pm] |
Me, my cats, my girlfriend, my best friend, and my entire store team are now safely out of the city. Everyone but the employees are in Hot Springs with my folks. I alternate between distracting myself (with boat rides, Xbox, and the general happiness of being with my parents) and watching the Weather Channel, checking the NOAA website, and emailing my team to make sure everyone is safe.
It's too much like three years ago, the sitting and waiting and hoping and worrying. I haven't been able to bring myself to turn on Muriel's webcam and watch the storm roll in the way I did during Katrina. I just turn over in my head all the places I care about, all the bits of home I left behind, the way my altars looked when I left them. My bookcases turned against the walls.
My heart is tossed and battered. I just want the storm to pass. |

Well, we're leaving town today. I'll be back post-Gustav, even if it looks like post-Katrina. Let's hope it doesn't.
We're headed north, to my parents' place in Arkansas. I'll post again once I get there.
Keep your fingers crossed, everybody. We need all the hope we can get. |

| an announcement, for your own good [public] |
[Aug. 20th, 2007|05:36 pm] |
...everyone should watch the entire five-season series of Six Feet Under.
Seriously. Pick your favorite long-running series (for some of you, that's Babylon 5, for others, let's say Buffy...but you get the idea). Remember how happy you were when you'd seen that whole story from start to finish? Remember how you wanted to share it with all your friends? It's like that.
And for those of you who disagree with me -- whether you're disagreeing because you don't like Six Feet Under or because you don't think it should be mandatory viewing -- I suggest you fill out a missing persons report. For your soul.
Carry on. |

If you haven't heard about this yet, either you don't live in Bloomington or...you're in a coma? So I'll skip the flowery OMG teh awesome part. Please come. Everyone you know is in it.
-- I'm stage managing. -- Christina and Mari and Jarett are designing for it. -- Jeana and Darja and Jarett are modeling. -- Daniel gave us headphones (thanks!). -- As always, the incomparable Willow and Libby are running this whole thing. -- There are other people I forgot that are on my friends page that are in it, I'm sure.
Please come. Please please please.
That is all. |

What is it about the blues that make me feel so damn good about life?
Seems like they should be more depressing than they are. They are, after all, the blues.
Some days I really miss Memphis. |

[Apr. 21st, 2006|09:53 am] |
I stepped outside this morning to move my car, and I was overwhelmed by the smell of eggs. A warm breeze blew down the street, and suddenly I was back in Paris. The smell, the feeling of it was so precise -- it was the feeling of standing on the corner of Rue de l'Odéon, waiting for the street vendor to hand me my breakfast. A crèpe with a thin slice of ham, gruyere cheese, egg, and black pepper became my daily routine for two weeks, and I've never in my life had a better breakfast than the one this vendor would give me every day. She would fold it into thirds, and I would eat it as I walked down the rue, down into the Odéon metro station to catch the blue line toward the cathedral, the Louvre, the gardens.
It's a comforting thought on a quiet morning to know that there's a little bit of Paris even here in Bloomington, if you just know how to look. |

I am...
I am the guy who came out to the entire school in his senior speech and got a standing ovation for his courage.
I am the girl who kisses her girlfriend on the sidewalk and laughs at those who glare.
We are the couple who planned and studied and got a damn good lawyer and BEAT the state that wanted to take our child away.
We are the ones who took martial arts classes and carry pepper spray and are just too dangerous to gay bash.
I am the transgender person who uses the bathroom that suits me, and demands that any complaining staff explain their complaint to my face in front of the entire restaurant -- and shares with my other Trans friends which restaurants don't raise a stink.
I am the mother who told her lesbian daughter to invite her girlfriend over for dinner.
I am the father who punished his son for calling you a fag.
I am the preacher who told my congregation that love, not hate, is the definition of a true follower of God.
I am the boy who made out with the preacher's son before I was old enough to understand my own sexuality, and never once have I looked back and considered that there was something "wrong with me".
I am the girl who did not learn the meaning of "homosexual" until high school but never thought to question why two men might be kissing.
I am the woman who argues (quite loudly and vehemently) with the bigots who insist that you do not have the right to marry or raise children.
We are the high school class who agrees, unanimously, along with our teacher, that love should be all that matters.
If you agree, repost this. Do it. You don't have to be afraid. You can handle it. You're stronger than you think.
I am making a difference. Hate will not win. |

| rise up nimbly [public] |
[Dec. 18th, 2005|10:55 pm] |
Rise up nimbly and go on your strange journey to the ocean of meanings.
The stream knows it can't stay on the mountain. Leave and don't look away from the sun as you go, in whose light you're sometimes crescent, sometimes full.
Can you endure silence? Are you a night fighter?
Or more a child bored with outgrown toys trying to win at tip-the-cat?
If you have any patience left, we know what to do.
If you love sleep, we'll tear you away. If you change into a mountain, we'll melt you.
If you become an ocean, we'll drain you.
This is how a human being can change: There's a worm addicted to eating grape leaves. Suddenly, he wakes up, call it grace, whatever, something wakes him, and he's no longer a worm.
He's the entire vineyard, and the orchard too, the fruit, the trunks, a growing wisdom and joy that doesn't need to devour. |

| the prophets have wondered [public] |
[Dec. 8th, 2005|09:39 pm] |
The prophets have wondered to themselves, "How long should we keep pounding this cold iron? How long do we have to whisper into an empty cage?"
So don't be timid. Load the ship and set out.
No one knows for certain whether the vessel will sink or reach the harbor.
Just don't be one of those merchants who won't risk the ocean!
This is much more important than losing or making money!
This is your connection to God.
Think of the fear and the hope that you have about your livelihood. They make you go to work diligently every day.
Now consider what the prophets have done. Abraham wore fire for an anklet. Moses spoke to the sea. David moulded iron. Solomon rode the wind.
Work in the invisible world at least as hard as you do in the visible.
Be a companion with the prophets, invisibly, so that no one knows.
You can't imagine what profit will come! When one of those generous ones invites you into his fire, go quickly! Don't say "But will it burn me? Will it hurt?"
Rise! Move around the center as pilgrims wind the Kaaba.
Being still is how one clay clod sticks to another in sleep, while movement wakes us up and unlocks new blessings. |
